Do airlines impose an upper age limit for new cabin crew joiners?
There are no upper age restrictions but the following guidelines are important for this role for the recruiters consideration:
1. This is an ab-initio role meaning it is the most junior and first role in the airline so priority is given to candidates who are freshers who have just a few years of work experience.
2. They are looking at applicants whom they can train and develop in the company and always easier to mold new talents and fresh minds to the airline's culture and values as they are eager to learn.
3. People with more experience may not always fit-in as this is a role where you are a doer, not a team leader or manager.
Occasionally, there may be a compelling reason to take someone above 30 if the HR panel is absolutely convinced that the person comes across that he or she can be easily trained, does not have set ideas, and unlikely to cause concerns for supervisors and pursers who may be 5 to 6 years younger than him or her. It is a fact that supervisors and managers have given feedback that it is harder to manage people with too many years of experience as they are often observed to be challenging the process. It is a fact that new hires who have less experience (under 30) are more eager to learn and moldable to the culture and desired behaviours expected of the role.
Looking and appearing young is not a consideration for HR. They prioritise on criteria such as ability to learn quickly, and likely to make progression upwards.
